Episode 009 – Day 14 – Project, Meet Wall

Today was a day full of hard to identify (for me) computer issues. A frustrating day simply because I had so much planned for the day. Getting Christmas Angel done and edited and uploaded to Podsafe Music Network… but the system had a different idea. Ah,the joys of being your own tech support, and stories from my own help desk experiences. Then a note or two about an upcoming performance, and a link with pictures for the carolers, an update about my Friday appearance on The Indigo Room: Creating Our Reality and Comments from the Podcast Gallery.

The Merry Maskers Carolers, DeVar Creative, Inc.

I have

  • A computer issue I get to work out or see if it simply disappears (not a bad thing, just something to be done)
  • Some advice on how to resolve the issue and keep it from happening again
  • A renewed appreciation of equipment that works with no issues

Episode 008 – Day 13 – A Touch of Sound

This update goes deeper into my views of sound overall, Acoustic vs. Electric vs. Electronic, and how my understanding of it helped me help myself when laying down tracks and making it easier for myself when it comes to post production editing. The things that made it past just a general knowledge into an understanding I didn’t have before. then a word about personal appearances, reviewing With A Voice Like This on iTunes, playing a new version of Christmas Angel and, of course, comments from the Podcast Gallery.

I have

  • A much better way to lay down tracks that makes it easier for me to sing
  • A way of being able to do post production that makes sense to me
  • A way to remix the song A Round for the Holidays
  • A goal of finishing Christmas Angel and playing the finished product tomorrow night

Day 10 – I had a secret

…And I didn’t even know it. I need shock mounts for my condenser microphones, or at least so the articles say. I thought all I had to do was keep from bumping them and it would be fine… little did I know about the insidious metallic ringing due to sound conduction by the microphone clip and as soon as I read that, I could hear it in everything I’ve recorded. Yeah, that’s it, it’s not my barely neophytic engineering skills, oh no, it’s not my fault at all. So now, I need them, they’re the answer to all my current and future recording problems, the holy grail of home recording, no…really. And no matter how hard I try to resist, I’ll end up buying them. I know I will.

Oh and today’s one quick bit of shameless promotion. If you read the blog and listen to the podcast, like it and have iTunes, please review the podcast this week, if possible, it will rank the show as high with multiple reviews in a short time span and get it bumped up to the front page of the Music area, so sayeth my friend who hasn’t been wrong yet.

Day 04 – Network me, baby

Today was the second of two four hour rehearsal with the group of thirty or so people with whom I professionally Carol. You only really have to make one, but I try to go to both every year just to do it and see some of the people I don’t get to see otherwise, like fellow Basses, we’re never on gigs together, so it’s fun to see them. And always good networking. Then came home and played around online. Not a bad day.

I have

  • a list of potential guests for the podcast.

Day 03 – Ramping up

Okay, down to business…I’ll lay out the format for following the With A Voice Like This Christmas project.

The blog will be as daily as I can make it. It will support the podcast by having a flash player in the blog posts for the days I have a show, but it won’t be limited only to those days. It will have notes from the podcast and be the repository for any links, release notifications, pictures and websites, mentioned in the podcast, so this will be a good place to track a lot of what goes on in the podcast and beyond.

The podcast With A Voice Like This and its schedule can be found at TalkShoe, talkcast ID #52008, if you want you join in the podcast live. During the project, the podcast is going to update 6 times a week, daily on weekdays at 7:00pm Central Standard Time (GMT – 6) and a weekly wrap-up on the weekend, either Saturday or Sunday. As many of these updates will be recorded live at 7:00pm as possible, but there will be prerecorded updates, hey, it’s just a part of life. If the updates run over 30 minutes, I’ll edit them into multiple episodes within reason and post them.

Any special upcoming episodes in the schedule will be marked with an asterisk (*) [Editor’s note: What’s special? A catchall term for ‘I don’t know what it is yet either’] and any episodes that doesn’t have an episode number on the schedule means it may not happen, either because it’s a weekend update and I don’t know which day I’m doing it, or I have conflicts with an out of town performance (I haven’t got a laptop, so being out of town limits my update capabilities for the podcast).

After the launch month of November, With A Voice Like This will move to Tuesdays at 7:00pm Central Time, with the Red Room After Party show directly following (you might want to check out the party sometime, but it’s very hush hush and the party is always on Tuesday after the show).

And now for my daily thing…

I have

  • A lot of setup work to do on Talkshoe

Day 02 – I have…A beginning

I have a song I wrote, a Christmas a cappella doo wop song. I like and sing with a group and they like it. I’ve been trying to get it professionally recorded for a couple of years now… it hasn’t happened.

I have low level professional recording equipment, I’m no recording engineer, the self recording I made of the Christmas song years ago is okay, but only to give people an idea. I’d like to get a recording out ther for people to hear… and buy.

I have a website, in fact, you’re reading from it right now. I have had quite a few sites with limited success for different groups, etc. I’d like too see more success there.

I have a podcast with a small, loyal following… it’s about voice. I’d like to see that audience grow, but can’t seem to get past a leveling off I’ve just hit.

I have a lot of frustrations based on all the previous ‘I have’s…Feeling like they’re not reaching their potential and spreading me pretty thin in too many directions.

I have had an idea… instead of working in different directions with all these, it makes sense to have them work altogether.

I have decided to self-record a CD’s worth of a cappella holiday music, including two original pieces, use a revamped blog and podcast to track the progress, market the end product, and sell the end product.

I have given myself the month of November to get it to that point.

I have a lot to learn.

I have a lot of support from friends.

I have an undiscovered success.

(And now)

I have a format for a weekly summary.

I have a beginning…

Want to come along and help me discover?

Day 01 – Welcome

Welcome to the With A Voice Like This Blog and Show notes page.

This blog will be all about voice…Performance, Podcasting, singing, experiences, teaching. You name it, it’s likely to show up here, either as a blog entry or show notes from the weekly ‘With A Voice Like This’ interactive podcast recorded live on Tuesday nights at 7:00PM Central Time (GMT-6).

But first, this blog is going to be an integral part of a month long holiday project. The With A Voice Like This Christmas project. This blog entry is the launch of the project in which I’ll be using Podcasting and New Media with different services across the internet to create a CD of a cappella Holiday music all by myself and giving regular updates in this blog and in my interactive podcast, newly renamed With A Voice Like This. There will be regular updates that you will be able to participate in at www.talkshoe.com and there will be more information about that in the coming days. Stayed tuned, this is Day 1, the launch of the project. More to come tomorrow!
