094 – A place to sing, some Legislation and a Recap

Recorded 10 March 2009

4-AM

  • I’ve talked about the new set we’ve put together. We’ve rehearsed it and we decided we’re ready to just get out there and kick the tires on this set. so we’re currently looking for a place to perform this set and we’re hoping it will be soon, so keep an eye out here or at 4-AM.net and you’ll know about it as soon as we do.
  • This isn’t 4-AM specific, but a few shows back I talked about the difference between Facebook pages and groups and said that I had a 4-AM Facebook page and switched my With A Voice Like This group to a page. And wouldn’t you know it, just after I did all the switching, they’re changing up how pages work. So I talk a little about it.

News You can Use

  • I got an e-mail forwarded to me  from the Chicago National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS, think Grammy) about the Performance Right Act on which Congress is currently holding hearings. I hadn’t had the time yet to look at it much, but it’s all about legislating terrestrial radio to pay for playing music on air. I know I’ll be discussing it in a future show, hopefully with some guests, but you can get a jump start on the topic at Grammy.com/musicfirst.

[EDIT – 15 March 2009 – Since posting the notes for this show, the above link to Grammy.com/musicfirst has changed. The site it linked to at the time of the notes were posted is www.capwiz.com/musicfirstcoalition/home/ [UPDATE: This page has been disabled]. You can find out more about music FIRST at www.musicfirstcoalition.org .]

At Any Rate

  • And speaking of Performance Rights and paying for airplay, I recap the Musicians at Work Panel I sat on Monday night, put on by the Chicago Music Commission and the City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs. Among other things we talked of copyright issues, how to start a podcast and many other things.
  • One of the other panelists, Jason Heath is quite an accomplished blogger and podcaster and you should take a listen and a look at his site, DoubleBassBlog.org and see what’s happening there.
  • One of the great things about the Musicians at Work Forum is the chance to meet other Chicago musicians. I got to meet Brian Mazzaferri and Mike Mentzer of I Fight Dragons and they were kind enough to give me a copy of their newest EP Cool is Just a Number. Check them out at IFightDragons.com

Time to try it out Live

Well, we’re going to jump in with both feet. At our rehearsal on Wednesday we felt really good about the set and so we decided it’s time for a time honored tradition of finding a spot to try it out and see how it plays in front of a live audience. Not a full gig…But run the set as a whole. And do it as soon as possible.

That does a couple of things for us. It gives us extra motivation to work out all the tweaks we need to make now and it gives us the chance to get comfortable with the set. You know, kick the tires and see how it rides. So you might want to keep looking for us while we’re looking for the place we’ll play because it might happen pretty quickly. We’ll give you as much notice as we can, of course, but it’s likely to happen with a short turnaround time.

While you can look for us here (lets not be too obvious, Jim), you can also find us and become a fan of our Facebook page [Update:  The group is no longer, so the Facebook page doesn’t exist] and become a fan while you’re at it. Oh and don’t forget to come up and say after any gig you attend. We’re nice…And silly…And well, I could go on for awhile, but not now.

Time to try it out Live originally appeared on 4-AM on 6 March 2009.

092 – The 700 Mega Hurts or…

Recorded 27 February 2009

…Why White Space gives me a headache

If you’re a musician or a speaker, or an actor, or a presenter and you use a wireless microphone system or wireless personal monitors (in ear) or a wireless guitar pickup and you don’t know whether or not it operates in the 700 MHz spectrum (698 – 806 MHz to be exact), you need to. You need to stop what you’re doing and check. You see, manufacturers aren’t making those systems in that range anymore and sooner rather than later, using that spectrum will be considered illegal. I know, tough language and a bit dramatic, but a real issue. The FCC has reallocated that spectrum and wireless systems won’t be allowed. And to make matters even more confusing to the little guy, it’s all based on Broadcast Television channels, channels 52 – 69. Take a listen.

So what do we do about it? If you have a professional sound person, most likely, nothing, they’ve got it handled. But if you don’t, that’s what this episode of With A Voice Like This is all about.

News You can Use

  • Why was it reallocated? For Public Safety and some commercial use. The FCC Public Notice from 2000 and a more recent explanation 700 MHz Second Report and Order
  • What it means to the Wireless users
  • What to Do with 700 MHz Wireless Systems a Prosoundnews.com post withA list of Manufacturers and their response (including rebate programs). The list includes  AKG, Audio-Technica, Audix, Electro-Voice, Lectrosonics, Sennheiser and Shure.

At Any Rate

  • The FCC’s Second Report and Order approving the use of White Space
  • Protections for wireless systems
  • Wireless systems are considered Licensed TVBDs
  • Licensed vs. unlicensed TVBDs (TV Band Devices)
  • Example of clear channels for wireless use in Chicago from the ProSoundWeb.com’s LiveSound article
  • Database setup for users registering channels and usage
  • FCC to solicit third party bids to create and maintain the database
  • A quick wrap up of the entire discussion

Additional Resource Links

  • “White Spaces”  Information [UPDATE: Article no longer exits on website] – Shure Pro  Audio article

I have no affiliation with Shure, I just got a lot of information through their Newsletter and companion website.

089 – Interview with Dave Kusek

Recorded 30 January 2009
Dave Kusek - co-author of The Future of Music
Dave Kusek

This episode of With A Voice Like This I’m speaking with Dave Kusek, co-author of the book The Future of Music: Manifesto for the Digital Music Revolution.

It’s been four years since the book came out and this show starts with what has changed and what has stayed the same since the book was published. But there’s a twist. At the beginning of the show I asked that we not focus on the technology itself for the entire interview, since the book had so much more to offer than just a discussion of technology. Among other thing we talk about what’s going on in China currently, the Universal Mobile Device (UMD) and of course, the Music like Water concept.

News You can Use
Monday 9 February at 5:30pm cst, the Musicians at Work Forum is going to be Licensing Your Music for Commercial Use. The Forum will be in the Claudia Cassidy Theater at the Chicago Cultural Center and is put on by Chicago Music Commission and the City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs.

For more information about Dave Kusek or how to purchase the book The Future of Music, you can visit his Blog Future of Music or follow him on Twitter.

Want to be a part of the show? All you have to do is send an e-mail to [email protected] or call the Comments from the Podcast Gallery voicemail line at 630.492.0487 and leave your questions, comments or suggestions and they’ll be on the show.

088 – I’m on the Run

Recorded 27 January 2009

We’ll be meeting at Pressure Point Recording Studios on Michigan Avenue in Chicago, a place I’ve wanted to check out for awhile now, I hear it’s phenomenal.  We’ll be talking about what recent changes have happened and where we’re heading, so I’m sure I’ll have a lot of information I’ll want to share.

  • Mark your calendars!  Friday, January 30 I’ll be recording a special live show with Dave Kusek, co-author of The Future of Music and Vice President at Berklee School of Music for a 45 minute discussion.
