109 – Chicago Resources, eJAMMING AUDiiO and Indie is Dead?

Recorded 11 August 2009

In this episode of With A Voice Like This I have an exclusive release and discuss:

News You Can Use
This is my exclusive for this episode, something no one else has but me and I’m sharing it with you!

  • The Chicago Music Commission has quietly launched a new Resources page on their website. It includes links to their blog, the Musicians at Work Forum, ChicagoFestivals.net and the newest offering, a searchable database of Chicago area music businesses [Edit:  site no longer exists]. Something no one else has in the city of Chicago and I’m the first to bring it to you.

At Any Rate

  • There was a bit of an assignment with this one. is a website that offers a real time collaborative network for musicians who want to jam and record with musicians in other locations with near zero latency over the internet. I take a look at the site and read a little feedback from the Podcast Gallery on this one.
  • I discuss a post by Richard Eoin Nash titled . Since I had only just read it, I’m open to hearing your take on the post and talked about how my thoughts differed from those of Mr. Nash and where they were the same. Feel free to give me your thoughts on the issue.

You can give me your feedback  in any number of ways. You can write me at [email protected] and even attach an audio file (.wav or .mp3 format preferably), or call the Comments from the Podcast Gallery voicemail line at 630.492.0487 and leave your thoughts (standard calling rates apply).  Then listen to hear your thoughts on the next show.

107 – The Thing About Copyrights…

Recorded 24 July, 2009

On this episode of With A Voice Like This:

At Any Rate
Almost the entire show is about rights, how artists can and do use them, how managers use them and how big business uses them as well.

  • A great example of how artists can take control of what’s happening comes from Paul Natkin’s blog about a Van Halen Contract regarding photography and shooting the band.
  • The Joss Stone “Let Them Eat Cake” (my nickname) YouTube video on Artists Paid blog [EDIT: site is no longer viable, I’ve removed the link 06-12-11]
  • Here’s the Joss Stone interview with Chelsea Handler [EDIT: The YouTube account that posted this interview has been removed, so I’ve removed the link 06-12-11] that I spoke of in the show but didn’t have the link for. it’s also on YouTube.
  • My music at Music Alley on  Mevio and on CD Baby
  • Article on TorrentFreak and RIAA’s views on DRM
  • Article on ars technica about the RIAAs views on DRM going to make a comeback.
  • Annie Lin’s excellent article about the Bing jingle contest

News You Can Use
This is a follow up to the last episode’s segment on TalentTrove and how Director of Marketing Jaime McGee responded to that segment in a positive way and how impressed I am with it.

106 – New Track, Old Copyrights and Talent Trove

Recorded 14 July 2009

In this episode of With A Voice Like This:

First listen to the new tracks I’ve laid down for my new show intro/outro. They’re very raw, so you get to hear them, see what you think and leave your thoughts on them. you’ll be hearing more of them soon, very soon, so get your two cents worth in now.

More copyrights talk anyone?

  • A few minor (but important) victories for YouTube in their class action suit  charging them with copyright infringement as seen in the cnet article. This doesn’t affect the Viacomm suit suit brought against YouTube directly, but does clear some of the infringement claims made.
  • A Revisit to the Usenet issue. A member of the Podcast Gallery alerted me to the fact that AT&T was shutting off access to Usenet from their services on or around July 15 in this CrunchGear article. While in my opinion the article makes use of a little fact and a lot of fertilizer, it does let you know what’s happening with Usenet.

News You Can Use
Okay, News You Can Use is a little backwards this show. I’m asking for your help in regards to the website TalentTrove.com. I received a letter suggesting a link exchange from the Director of Marketing even including a link to where my link would be found. I give you a brief synopsis of my experience in researching them and I just really want to know what you, The Podcast Gallery think of Talent Trove. So take a listen and you can leave a comment, send an e-mail to [email protected], or call the Comments From the Podcast Gallery voicemail line at 630.492.0487 and leave me a message (standard calling rates apply).

The topics on this week’s show include:

4-AM
I talk about the recording 4-AM did the previous Wednesday and the technique called multing. what it is, how it works and my general feelings on its use.

At Any Rate
This show’s At Any Rate is all about the June 30 Ruling by a Federal Judge finding that Usenet.com is liable for copyright infringement from this Ars Technica article. I think this is a landmark finding that open up more doors  to futures suit of this type. I talk about how Usenet.com really shot themselves in the foot with this and my opinoins on the outcome of the case.
