126 – Toy Block Music ‘Eats Paste’

Recorded 02 March 2010

This episode of With A Voice Like This is a very special interview with Joanna Quargnali-Linsley of Toy Block Music and Misery Loves Co. about the March 4th preview of the EP Eats Paste to be released April 1st of this year.

Joanna tells us about the overall project and how it came about, how the charity Pager was chosen to receive a portion of the profits from the sale of the EP and some of the different experiences. A few of the artists who appear on the EP called in as well to talk about their part in the process (as well as tell a few stories) and best of all? I got to play clips from 6 of the 7 songs that will appear on the April 1st EP release. Here are the songs on the EP and their respective artists:

  • Oh Susannah – artist is Arlen Ginsburg ( Website – Facebook Fan page) [Monica DaSilva – vocals (Website – MySpace page)]
  • Wheels on the Bus – Olin Langley (MySpace page) and SpaceFace
  • Crawdad Man – Austin Collins and the Rainbirds (Website – MySpace page)
  • There was an Old Woman – Anna Soltys (Facebook Fan page – MySpace page)
  • The Cat Came Back – Alex Sanders (Facebook Fan Page for The Texas Funerals – Facebook Fan page for The Quincy Not-So-Fine Arts Society) and The MeowTones
  • Wynken, Blynken and Nod – Stereo Sinai (Website – Facebook Fan page – MySpace page)

And here’s the seventh track on the EP, just recorded two days before the show, so a mix wasn’t available.

  • Alice the Camel – David Kav (Website)

Other sites mentioned in the show

  • I Wear Your Shirt
  • American Specialty Toy Retailing Association (ASTRA)

One more thing…
If you’re listening closely in the show, I took it as a personal challenge to find a musical joke in the Toy Block Logo and I won. What did I win? A free copy of the Eats Paste EP. But I’m not going to keep it…Oh no, I’m going to figure out a way to give it away to a lucky listener. Got any ideas? Leave me a comment and we’ll see what happens.

106 – New Track, Old Copyrights and Talent Trove

Recorded 14 July 2009

In this episode of With A Voice Like This:

First listen to the new tracks I’ve laid down for my new show intro/outro. They’re very raw, so you get to hear them, see what you think and leave your thoughts on them. you’ll be hearing more of them soon, very soon, so get your two cents worth in now.

At Any Rate
More copyrights talk anyone?

  • A few minor (but important) victories for YouTube in their class action suit  charging them with copyright infringement as seen in the cnet article. This doesn’t affect the Viacomm suit suit brought against YouTube directly, but does clear some of the infringement claims made.
  • A Revisit to the Usenet issue. A member of the Podcast Gallery alerted me to the fact that AT&T was shutting off access to Usenet from their services on or around July 15 in this CrunchGear article. While in my opinion the article makes use of a little fact and a lot of fertilizer, it does let you know what’s happening with Usenet.

News You Can Use
Okay, News You Can Use is a little backwards this show. I’m asking for your help in regards to the website TalentTrove.com. I received a letter suggesting a link exchange from the Director of Marketing even including a link to where my link would be found. I give you a brief synopsis of my experience in researching them and I just really want to know what you, The Podcast Gallery think of Talent Trove. So take a listen and you can leave a comment, send an e-mail to [email protected], or call the Comments From the Podcast Gallery voicemail line at 630.492.0487 and leave me a message (standard calling rates apply).

I play some clips that I’ve gotten done this week and see what you think of them:

  • No Time
  • Follow Me

One More Thing
I’ve decided to lower the price of the With A Voice Like This Christmas because of the way the digital distribution works and I felt it was the only way to be equitable with everyone involved, especially CD Baby. This presented an opportunity for me with the person who  immediately bought my CD at the higher price and what I decided to do about that.

Next week’s show will be recorded on Tuesday, November 25 because of the Holiday. Join me then live.

062 – A Tool and A Launch

recorded 24 July 2008

At Any Rate (00:00:32)
This episode takes a look at a tool I had seen trumpeted as a “copyright infringement assessment tool” PDTool, why I think it’s not a good tool and some much better alternatives for dealing with copyright infringement assessment as a new media person, Public Domain Music and the Podcasting Legal Guide.

4-AM (00:11:37)
This episode was also the official launch announcement of for http://4-AM.net [edit: neither the site nor group exists any longer], the official website for our a cappella group. A quick trip through the site, which took until the last minute before the show to get loaded (Ah the joys of downloading program patches when an app fails and conversion times) and it was ready to go by show time. Take a look, see what you think and let us know. Yay for it being launched!

Day 31 – Marketing 101?

A lot of things have lined up for today and I would be totally remiss not to take advantage of it and let it help fuel what I’m doing. First, the date, it’s December 1st (and a Saturday, bonus!). For some purists, this is the first allowable day to play Christmas music, so there will be an increase of web surfing for Holiday music. Second, I have three finished pieces that I can put on the site to show it’s more than just a one shot CD and Third, I have a commercially acceptable song in We Three Kings. The time to strike is here and let what I’ve done stand on its own two feet and power the rest of the project as well.

So off I go to SellMusicDirect.com [Edit: site no longer exists] to upload the music. Since I haven’t said anything since the beginning about this, I’ll recap a little. I have a PRO account with SellMusicDirect.com. This means I can put up to 6 CD projects in this account and they will not only sell downloads, but will also manufacture CDs on demand, as long as I’ve put together the CD and artwork. That way I can sell the CD without having to carry a minimum amount of inventory. Great deal for what I’m doing. I go into my account and start to set it up to sell The songs and I’m met with a Genre list that I classify the song. I was working first on We Three Kings and this is the list that I got:

Now there’s no Holiday genre and no A cappella genre, so the question becomes, what genre do I use? From what I’ve seen, most a cappella music usually get put in the jazz genre because the industry doesn’t seem to know what to do with it, so I’ll put it in Smooth Jazz. We’ll see how that goes, if I get any feedback based on a miscategorization. I also chose to have it listed as podsafe, though I may go back and change after rereading what the site’s definition of podsafe is. So now it’s out as a downloadable single at BuyMusicDirect.com [Edit: site no longer exists], as well as Christmas Angel and A Round For the Holidays.

I have

  • Music available for purchase online
